The Berlinale Talent Campus is an international summit of the most talented up-and-coming filmmakers. The six-day programme is designed for young directors, producers, screenwriters, cinematographers, set designers, sound designers/composers, editors, visual artists and film critics/journalists from all over the world. The Campus is an annual event that takes place parallel to the Berlin International Film Festival. The Campus and its participants benefit greatly from their proximity to the main festival centre and the European Film Market (EFM). The 350 young students or graduates from film schools and/or film professionals early in their careers are invited to learn from top experts through lectures, seminars and workshops, and have the opportunity to build international networks.
Target Group
The application consists of three parts (Part 3 is optional):
Part 1: Online application
First you must accept the conditions for participating in the Berlinale Talent Campus. You will then proceed to the online application form which you must complete in English.
Part 2: Submit a sample of work
You have to send in ONE of the following items as a sample of your work.
- 2.1. FOR DIRECTORS, PRODUCERS, EDITORS, CINEMATOGRAPHERS, ART DIRECTORS, PRODUCTION DESIGNERS, SOUND DESIGNERS/COMPOSERS & ACTORS
The film sample can either be a film made specifically for the Talent Campus application, a three minute short film or an excerpt or series of clips from pervious work. Please do not send a fast edit show reel. The sample should be in English, or subtitled in English. It should highlight your creativity rather than a certain theme or topic.
Technical Specifications for films: Only VHS, Mini-DV or DV-CAM (PAL or NTSC) formats will be considered. We do NOT accept DVDs, CDs, BetacamSP, Digi-Beta or any other format. We also offer the OPTION of uploading your film. The file may not exceed 150 MB, and should be coded in MPEG 2 or MPEG4 (720 x 576, 25fps, max. 6000kbps, multiplexed: audio and video in one file.
2.2 For SCREENWRITERS ONLY:
Your sample of work should be an excerpt from your screenplay or a screenplay for a short film. The maximum length is 5 pages. If this is an excerpt, please also include a synopsis (max. length half a page). The synopsis and excerpt or screenplay should be uploaded as one single file to your online application. The accepted file format is PDF. We do NOT accept Word documents, Final Draft or other type of files. Please don't forget to identify these with your name and application number and please make sure all documents are collected and saved into one, single PDF file.2.3 For SOUND DESIGNERS/COMPOSERS ONLY:
Instead of film material, your sample of work may also be an MP3 audio file upload (not exceeding 5MB). The maximum length is 5 minutes. You can either upload this file to our website OR post it. Please identify the posted document with your application number.
In addition to film material, applicants from the following fields of work may submit the following material to support their visuals:
- 2.4 For PRODUCTION DESIGNERS and ART DIRECTORS ONLY:
You may upload a PDF file (5 pages maximum) with photos of your production design/art direction work. Additionally you must attach a synopsis (1 page maximum) of the project for which your designs were used. Please do not forget to identify these with your name and application number. If you decide to upload extra material, please make sure all documents are collected and saved into one, single PDF file that does not exceed 2 MB. Upload your file directly to your application where indicated.
Part 3 (optional): HANDS ON TRAINING
The Berlinale Talent Campus offers in addition to the general programme, several Hands On Training Programmes. You must fill out a second application form, and submit a second sample of work to be considered for these programmes. You will find a link to apply for these in your online application if your field of work corresponds to the programme.
3.1 For DOC STATION:
Doc Station is open for DIRECTORS and PRODUCERS. Your application should include a short synopsis and a treatment of 10-15 pages in one PDF. The treatment should be a summary of the feature length documentary. It should detail the beginning, middle and end of the project as you envision it. You must also fill out the application form and submit video material of up to 5 minutes, following the technical guidelines as mentioned above (see 2.1). If you cannot provide video footage, then photographs and an explanation thereof are required as an exception. These should also be in the single PDF, along with your treatment & synopsis. This may either be in English or German, however the application form must be completed in English. Please note that Doc Station is not open to previous participants of the Berlinale Talent Campus.3.2 For SCRIPT STATION:
Script Station is open for SCREEN WRITERS. Your application should include a short synopsis, 10-15 page treatment (detailing the script’s start, middle & end) and a dialogue scene. These should be in one single PDF file and uploaded to your application. The screenplay should be complete at the time of the application deadline, as the jury may request the full script for the selection process. The script may either be in English or German, however the application form must be completed in English. Please note that Script Station is not open to previous participants of the Berlinale Talent Campus.3.3 For TALENT PROJECT MARKET:
The Talent Project Market is open to PRODUCERS and DIRECTORS. The TPM gives young filmmakers the opportunity to present their projects to professional co-producers and financiers. The project must be suitable for an international co-production and a feature for theatrical release. You must fill out the application form, and upload to your online application a 5 page treatment/synopsis of a feature length fiction film that is suitable for co production, in English in one PDF or Word document and one 5 page script excerpt from the feature also in English in a separate PDF or Word document. You must also have an advanced draft of the script ready for the application deadline, and an English script by the time of the festival. The TPM is also open to previous participants of the Berlinale Talent Campus.3.4 For Score Competition: TBA
3.5 For the BERLIN TODAY AWARD:
The Berlin Today Award is open to all applicants and previous participants of the Berlinale Talent Campus. The project should be a 10 minute short film, with no restrictions on genre. You must fill out the application form (found in your Campus online application – for applicants - or profile – for alumni). You will be required to provide a 1-2 sentence logline, max. 2000 character synopsis, a script and a budget estimate, as well as a sample of work with no length restriction.
Conditions
Your application for the Berlinale Talent Campus will only be processed if you meet the following requirements:
- You are fluent in the English language.
- You fill out the application form correctly and fully in English. In case you are selected as participant, please be aware that your data will be published on our website as provided by you.
- You work in one of these areas: screenwriting, producing, direction, cinematography, acting, editing, sound design, film music composition, animation, art direction, production design.
- You have worked on at least one short film that was awarded a prize, OR your have had a film screened at an international film festival, OR you have worked on a film of at least 60 minutes in length, OR you are a student in your final year at a film school or in a post-graduate film programme.
- You have not participated in previous editions of the Berlinale Talent Campus (with the exception of those applying to the Talent Project Market or the Berlin Today Award).).
- You have submitted a complete application, including sample of work.
- You can attend all 6 days of the Campus.
Please note that the application is individual. We cannot accept team applications. You must have obtained the consent of the other copyright owners for the use of the work sample submitted as stated below.
Participation fee
A partial reimbursement of accommodation and travel expenses will be offered to participants who are not German or do not reside in Germany. The amount will be determined on an individual basis and at the discretion of the Berlinale Talent Campus.

New Call 2010
The theme of the 2010 edition of the Talent Campus is Cinema Needs Talent: Looking for the Right People. For many filmmakers, teaming up with the right people to inspire and support them and to create a collective vision is the essential element of successful filmmaking. The upcoming Talent Campus will tap into these thoughts and ask how the development of personal craftsmanship and the experience of choosing the right people intertwine to build gainful long-term creative collaborations.
The Talent Campus programme consist of the following elements:
Grand Format: Lectures and panel discussions with leading industry professionals and stars
Hands-on training: Personal tutoring, coaching and training of participants from different fields of work
Atelier: Workshops, seminars and case studies enabling Talents to interact with world-class experts from all cinema disciplines
Excursions: Meeting professionals or visiting key film industry institutions in Berlin-Brandenburg
Networking: Events such as the daily breakfasts, speed matching sessions, lunch breaks and other social gatherings.
Doc Station One of the hands-on training programmes is Doc Station, which is aimed at documentary directors and producers. 10 - 12 feature-length documentary projects are selected and the connected filmmakers participate in one-on-one feedback sessions with internationally renowned documentary experts. During the Berlinale Talent Campus, personal sessions with these experts are arranged to provide concrete feedback and guidance and further develop the project. This programme is recommended only for documentary filmmakers who have complete treatments for works-in-progress.
If you wish to apply for the Doc Station, you must first apply to the Berlinale Talent Campus as a director or producer. During the application process, you will be guided to the Doc Station application where you can read a detailed description of the materials you must submit for consideration. Your submission may be in either English or German, however the application form must be completed in English.
