"A Journey with Anita is perhaps the best screenplay I’ve ever written, but I never made it as a film. If I have any regrets, they are linked to the fact that I haven’t realized that film.” Fellini, an interview, 1989.
There is a film Fellini wrote before La Dolce Vita, which very few people know about, also because he never made it: A Journey with Anita. The biographically inspired film tells the journey of a writer, Guido, and his lover Anita from Rome to the Adriatic Sea in order to reach his father’s deathbed. It is the most intimate story by Fellini, a return to the origins accomplished through confrontation with the landscapes and the traditions of Central Italy.
Fifty years on, guided by Fellini’s text, we’ll retake that journey. The result will be a film full of encounters, which originality is especially due to a powerful use of animation techniques.
